Our
village is located in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains about 10
miles southwest of San Jose at the entrance of a historic pass which was
once a toll road. Big Basin Way is our downtown main street. It becomes
Congress Springs Road west of town. And it is Highway 9 all the way. Many
uphill miles later as it crosses the ridge line which is Skyline Boulevard,
it continues down into the San Lorenzo Valley as Highway 9 all the way
to Santa Cruz. The entire San Lorenzo Valley was logged out in the late
1800's with the exception of what is now known as Big Basin Park. Horse-drawn
teams and wagons used the road to haul redwood logs out to a sawmill about
2 miles west of the village. Tolls were charged on a portion of the road
until it became public property. (continued
