The cities south of San Francisco and Oakland lie in what was once a rich
fruit and vegetable growing region. Until the early 1960's there were lots
of agriculture, orchards, dairies, wineries and many food-processing industries.
The primary manufacturers in the region were Lockheed and Westinghouse
in Sunnyvale, and the Ford Plant in Milpitas. Industrial production developed
significantly after World War II and growth has since been rapid. There
are still manufacturers of business, electric, food-processing machinery;
household goods, aircraft and motor parts. But the manufacture of computers,
silicon chips and electronic items started taking the lead in the late
1960's, 1970's and 1980's in the area now commonly known as Silicon Valley.
