Among the city's parks are Alum Rock Park, with mineral springs; Kelley Park, with a zoo and a Japanese garden and tea house; the municipal Rose Garden: the Japanese Friendship Garden; Overfelt Botanical Gardens; and Rosicrucian Park, with an Egyptian museum and a planetarium. There are many more parks in the county and in other adjacent cities. The Coyote Lake County Park in the southern part of the county has over 4400 acres. There are several lakes for fishing and boating in the county. The Alviso area of the city touches the San Francisco Bay, and for awhile in the 1800's was an actual seaport. Rancho Santa Teresa Historic Park in the western part of the county has a working farm from the horse and buggy days. Within the park, fresh, maybe magical water continually flows from seams in a formation of hard grey sandstone called the "Healing Waters of Santa Teresa's Spring".
The Tech Museum of Innovation, the Children's Discovery Museum, the California State University, and the National Hockey League's Sharks home games are in the city. Happy Hollow Park & Zoo has animals, a petting zoo, children's rides and puppet shows. Raging Waters in east San Jose is a water amusement park with wave pools, innertube rides, wading areas, waterfalls, playgrounds and nearly a dozen different types of waterslides. In the north part of the county Paramount's Great America Amusement park has roller coasters, shows, music, movie-themed rides, and IMAX theater, Nickelodeon's Splat City and Star Trek's Klingons and Ferengi. Nearby is the NASA Ames Research Center, Minolta Planetarium, and the Intel Museum. Also in the local area is the Magic Edge, a virtual reality flight-simulation center.
There are several historical museums in and near the city. There is the Winchester Mystery House, a bizarre 160-room Victorian mansion built by the eccentric Sarah Winchester, wife of the famous inventor of the Winchester rifle. The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum contains the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts in the western US. The History Museums have recreatd the look and feel of turn-of the-century. The Portuguese Historical Museum has preserved the culture and heritage of Portuguese immigrants to the Santa Clara Valley. The City's Museum of Quilts and Textiles preserves the art, craft and history of quilts and textiles. The Campbell Historical Museum and Ainsley House showcases the life in Santa Clara Valley during the 1920s and 1930s, as well as the history of the city of Campbell.
Among the local art museums are the Museum of Art, the Triton Museum of Art, de Saisset Museum of art and California history on the Santa Clara University campus, the Stanford University Museum of Art on the Stanford University campus, Stanford Art Spaces, Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Rodin Sculpture Garden at Stanford University, Papua New Guinea Sculpture Garden at Stanford, and Villa Montalvo's nonprofit art and performance center.
