   This area is now a park located in the midst of a bustling downtown lined with fashionable restaurants, shops, cafes and nightspots. We have preserved more of our city's history than has any other city in California.
   In addition to its historical landmarks, our city is also home to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf and the oldest jazz festival in the world, the Monterey Jazz Festival. Not far away is the Laguna Seca race course which is considered to be the number one road course in the world. Nearby can be found hang gliding and some of the most famous golf courses in the world.
   In the bay the largest marine sanctuary in the United States extends from the Farallones near San Francisco south past Monterey to San Simeon. The south center part of the bay is where the Monterey Submarine Canyon, comparable in size and shape to the Grand Canyon begines,.extending over 50 miles offshore, reaching depths near 12,000 feet. This canyon allows coastal upwellings of nutrient rich water from the depths of the ocean every spring. Plankton then grows abundantly which forms the basis of the food chain for all marine animals.
    The climate in Monterey is very mild, averaging 57 degrees. The fog bank comes in most evenings and goes back offshore the following morning. Visitors should dress warmly. Fisherman's Wharf is a popular attraction for visitors. Some of the city's best restaurants are here. And one can get some of the freshest fish anywhere.
