In 1602 Sebastian
Vizcaino "discovered" our bay and peninsula. He named the bay after the
viceroy of New Spain. Our
city got its start when a presidio was built by the Mexican army in 1770.
It became the capitol of Las Californias in 1776. The adobe custom house
which presided over Mexico's only west coast port of entry still stands
today. It was here that Commodore John Drake Sloat raised the American
flag in July of 1846 claiming for the United States the large territory
later to become Utah, Colorado, Arizona, California and New Mexico.
