Welcome - - - Our city began in the 1800's as a rural sanctuary for those who loved nature and those who were hiding from the law. A green and serene alcove which faces San Francisco Bay, the town is sheltered on the west side from ocean winds and fog by the San Bruno Mountains. In the early days, shellfish could be easily gathered from the shore, and the hills had an abundance of rabbit and deer. During this time, the town was called "Visitation".
    With the arrival of developer Arthur Annis at the beginning of the Great Depression, the old town of Visitation was renamed to the present day name. Anyone was allowed to purchase a lot very cheaply and build their own home. During the thirties the town established utility services, a bus service, a public school and a library, and more. From there the community grew into the city it is today, a well-kept secret just southeast of San Francisco.
    There is a strong spirit of community throughout the city. There is the Community Association which plans social events and civic projects, the Educational Support Team which raises money for education, and the Youth Sports Association run by volunteers. These are just a few of its many community organizations.
    The city also has a website containing many items of interest to the residents, including classified ads, lost and found, tutors available, recipe exchange, letters to Santa, introduction of new residents, and much more.
